Case study: ArcelorMittal
At the end of 2008 Unisys indicated that the current Unisys mainframe was obsolete and would not be supported beyond October 2011. The combination of the business criticality, hardware age and the support situation elevated the risk of the Unisys hardware failure to the top position within the Information Management risk register in South Africa. On top of that, the TCO of the mainframe was very high and ArcelorMittal was faced with an aging Cobol skills pool and had difficulties to find new skills in the market.
After thorough assessment of the different alternatives (including recompile on open systems, re-platform, rewrite, renew existing mainframe), ArcelorMittal management concluded that the best way forward was to work with Asysco to re-platform the mainframe applications to a modern Intel/Microsoft platform through applying an automated migration process and transform all the Unisys proprietary technologies to standardised windows equivalents. Through the same automated process, Cobol was to be replaced with VB.NET.
“Asysco is a company with skilled professionals that provide excellent service and take full project ownership. They deliver to their promises and do not shy away from any challenges that arise.”Graham Hocknell, Manager Production and Planning Systems, Information Management
